DESCRIPTION: APW - Embrée, Newyork (sic), verge fusee, 56mm, silver OF original pair cases, inner marked with casemaker's incuse "I I P" marking, outer containing three papers for watchmakers Jos. Weiss, John Newhard and William Maus all of Pennsylvania, white enamel dial with script signature, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, openwork plate mask over approximately 1/2 of mvt surface, s#10 visible to mvt dial plate and cases both with s#6510 having corresponding last two digits. This interesting early Federal era watch is of evident French origin and charmingly includes the accent mark in the signature as well as combines Newyork (sic) into a single word. Effingham Embree was born in 1759 and was in business on his own in New York from 1789 to 1795 after having been previously in business with Joseph Pearsall. After 1795 he relocated to Long Island and sold his New York business to Stephen Van Wyck. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. CONDITION: Mvt: Running with a very short balance amplitude, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent lustrous gilt tone, some small scratches adjacent plate pins, fine scratch under portion of plate mask; excellent dial with some very short hls at left perimeter; fair replacement hands, minute is broken; outer case shows light wear, an attractive dark patina, some scattered dings and small mild dents to rear perimeter, button latch good; inner case shows light wear, some scratches and shallow denting to rear, some denting around sides, evident repair to pendant junction with solder excess visible internally; bow pivots freely and with side-to-side slide along its pendant pin; good domed glass bull's-eye crystal.
